Mindfulness, a Lever to Emotional Balance

I listen to the rain beat off my neighbor’s tin roof. Windmills are spinning in the distance. The shades of blue and pink fill the sky as the sunsets. I sit and follow my breath with my awareness while also allowing myself to hear the rain and see the beautiful sights.
It has been an immensely stressful time. Negative thoughts and emotions cloud judgement and build up stress inducing neurotransmitters. The cocktail of cortisone and adrenaline swirls through my body, causing a tightness.
Mindfulness is like the lever that can drain the stress cocktail. As I take in nature and place attention on my breathe, the mind builds space between it and the previous pattern of stressful thought. Each gap in that thought pattern causes for less of a release of negative chemical therefore less of a sensation of negative emotion. Within the spaciousness the opposite, the positive emotions begin to take its place.
Practice being present today and use the lever to let out the negative and bring in the positive.
